Last summer, the Rockefeller Foundation announced a partnership with Rebuild by Design, an initiative of President Obama’s Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force. Rebuild by Design (RBD) is an innovative process aimed at addressing structural and environmental vulnerabilities exposed by Superstorm Sandy throughout the affected region, and developing fundable solutions to build resilience in communities.
Ten competitively selected Design Teams spent the Fall traveling through the region and learning about its vulnerabilities in an effort to identify specific design opportunities that would have a significant and positive impact on resilience. This effort yielded a wealth of new knowledge and understanding about the common and particular issues faced by communities throughout the region.
Rebuild by Design has now released to the public their Research Report: A Regional Analysis. Some highlights of the report include:
- An exploration of the major vulnerabilities of the region
- A catalog of approaches to addressing these vulnerabilities
- An index of relevant reports—including seven previously unreleased reports—and tools by subject and topic on the Sandy region, and the issues it faces
Rebuild by Design continues to work in the region—its efforts will culminate in April with HUD’s announcement of the projects that will move into implementation. Visit their website to learn how you can get involved in upcoming RBD events.
