David Hempton is a leading social historian of religion. He came to Bellagio in July 2022 to turn his 2021 Gifford Lectures at the University of Edinburgh into a book about the history of world Christianity between two revolutions in communication – print and the internet. In addition to the prestigious Gifford Lectures, he has delivered many endowed lectures and published over a hundred articles and many books. Hempton is presently the John Lord O’Brian Professor of Divinity and Dean of the Harvard Divinity School.
