Kasia Chmielinski is a distinguished technologist focused on building responsible data systems across industry, academia, government, and non-profit domains. They are also a purveyor of multimedia stories, and their work has been supported by organizations including Sundance, Vision Maker Media, and NPR. Kasia came to Bellagio in May 2023 to research and begin scripting UNSUPERVISED, an audio series investigating the impact of today’s unregulated, unstandardized and undocumented use of data on society. They are currently the Co-Founder of the Data Nutrition Project, an initiative that builds tools to mitigate bias in artificial intelligence, and a fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School and Stanford University focused on building responsible data systems.

Kasia Chmielinski is the cofounder of The Data Nutrition Project, an initiative that builds tools to mitigate bias in artificial intelligence, and a data and AI advisor at the United Nations. They are also an affiliate at Stanford University and Harvard University focused on building responsible data systems. Chmielinski spent almost two decades strategizing around and building software systems across a number of disciplines and regions, from supporting the rollout of localized Google products in Europe to building AI at ZestAI that provides credit access for the underbanked in the United States. At the White House (U.S. Digital Service), they provided guidance on streamlining data pipelines for a variety of projects including farmworker visa applications and opioid overdose data. They are also involved in building artistic narratives around the role of technology in democracy through projects supported by organizations like the Rockefeller Foundation, the Sundance Institute, NPR and Ars Electronica.
