Project: “Always Crashing in the Same Car”
Lance Olsen is an American writer known for his experimental, lyrical, fragmentary, cross-genre narratives that question the limits of historical knowledge. Olsen came to Bellagio in May of 2022 to work on a novel-in-progress about David Bowie’s last months—those during which he worked on his acclaimed album “Black Star” while battling liver cancer. Olsen is the author of more than thirty books, and his short stories, essays, and reviews have appeared in hundreds of journals and anthologies. A Guggenheim, Berlin Prize, D.A.A.D. Artist-in-Berlin Residency, N.E.A. Fellowship, and Pushcart Prize recipient, as well as a Fulbright Scholar, he teaches narrative theory and practice at the University of Utah.
