Project: “Incomplete Sentences”
Nancy Gertner is a former U.S. federal judge, appointed by President Bill Clinton to the U.S. District Court of Massachusetts in 1994, and has built her career around standing up for women’s rights, civil liberties, and justice for all. She came to Bellagio in 2023 to complete a book that combines interviews from men she sentenced with literature about mass incarceration and racism, issues endemic to the American criminal justice system. Nancy is currently a Senior Lecturer of Law at Harvard Law School. She has written and spoken throughout the U.S., Europe, and Asia and was named one of “The Most Influential Lawyers of the Past 25 Years” by Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly.
