Project: “Human right witnesses in a world of deepfakes and AI-based creativity: An analysis and action plan focused on the people who directly shape our understanding of human rights crises and their relationship to emerging technologies of AI-synthesis and media manipulation”
Sam Gregory is an award-winning technologist, media-maker, and advocate. He is an expert on smartphone witnessing, deepfakes and generative AI as well as innovations in preserving trust, authenticity and evidence in an era of increasing audiovisual communication and mis/disinformation. He has written for WIRED, The Hill, and numerous academic journals, and has been interviewed by major media worldwide. Sam visited Bellagio in August 2023 to work on an analysis and action plan focused on the people who shape our understanding of human rights crises and their relationship to emerging technologies of AI-synthesis and media manipulation. He the Executive Director of WITNESS, a global network helping people use video and technology to defend human rights.
