Project: “Operationalizing Digital Self Determination”
Stefaan Verhulst is a leading academic in the fields of digital governance and science policy. In 2018, he was recognized as one of the 10 Most Influential Academics in Digital Government globally. He came to Bellagio in October 2022 to work on the concept of digital self-determination, which explores autonomy and communal responsibility in the context of algorithmic harms, data access and re-use, highlighting a pressing imperative to re-imagine the ‘self’ in the digital space. Verhulst is Co-Founder of the Governance Laboratory (The GovLab) at New York University (NYU) and Editor-in-Chief of the open access journal Data & Policy (Cambridge University Press).
