Project: “Binary Calculations are Inadequate to Assess Us: Data Commons”
Stephanie Dinkins is a transmedia artist who creates platforms for dialogue about race, gender, aging, and the equitable development of artificial intelligence. Dinkins came to Bellagio in October 2022 to work on her project “Binary Calculations Are Inadequate to Assess Us,” which explores how we might infuse digital civic systems with care, using data contributed by the public to demonstrate how direct civic and social participation enabled by AI can model alternative scaffolding for our civic infrastructures and intervene in existing power structures. Dinkins is the Kusama Endowed Professor of Art at Stony Brook University where she founded the Future Histories Studio.
